Generator Installation for Westworth Village Homes

We put in standby generators and safe connections for portable ones. The unit is sized to what you need running, wired through a transfer switch, permitted and inspected with us on site. When the grid goes down, your home changes over the right way.

Backup Power That Is Sized and Wired Correctly

A generator is only as good as the way it is tied into your home. A unit that is too small trips under load. A unit hooked up without a transfer switch can send power back down the utility line and hurt a lineworker. We handle the electrical side so neither happens.

Most of our generator jobs fall into two groups. Some homeowners want a permanent standby unit that starts on its own and runs off natural gas. Others already own a portable generator and want a safe way to plug it in instead of running cords through a window. We do both.

Ice storms in winter and long summer outages are the usual reasons people call us. Either way, the work is the same: figure out the load, pick the right equipment, and install it so it passes inspection the first time.

What Generator Installation Includes

Load calculation

We list what you want running during an outage, like the fridge, furnace blower, AC, well pump or medical equipment. Then we add it up and size the generator to match.

Transfer switch

An automatic transfer switch for standby units, or a manual switch or panel interlock for portable generators. This keeps generator power and utility power from ever meeting.

Pad and placement

We set the unit on a level pad with the clearance the manufacturer and code call for. That means distance from windows, doors and vents so exhaust stays out of your home.

Wiring and inlet

We run the feeder from the generator to the switch and panel. For portable units, we mount a weatherproof inlet box outside so you plug in one cord.

Fuel coordination

Gas piping is plumber's work. We line up our schedule with whoever runs the gas line so the unit is ready to start once both sides are done.

Permit and inspection

We file the paperwork the local jurisdiction requires and meet the inspector on site. You get the signed-off record for your files.

Signs It Is Time for a Generator

You lost food or heat last outage
If a multi-day outage cost you a full fridge or a cold house, a standby unit or a portable hookup is worth a look before the next one.
Someone at home relies on power
Oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines and refrigerated medicine cannot wait for the utility. Backup power keeps them running.
Cords through the window
Running extension cords from a portable generator into the house is risky and hard on your appliances. An inlet and transfer switch fixes that.
You work from home
If a day without power means a day without pay, automatic backup for your office circuits makes sense.
Someone backfed the panel
If a past owner wired a generator straight into a dryer outlet or the panel with no switch, that is a serious hazard. We can tear it out and do it right.

Steps of a Generator Install

  1. 1

    We come look

We check your panel, find your gas meter and see where the unit can go. Then we cover what you want to keep powered and the choice between standby and portable.

  2. 2

    Estimate in writing, then filing

Your written estimate spells out the generator size, the type of switch and the wiring route. After you sign off on it, we file with the local jurisdiction.

  3. 3

    Installation

We place the pad and the unit, mount the transfer switch and run the wire. Your power goes off for part of the day while we tie in at the panel, and we let you know the time in advance.

  4. 4

    Testing and inspection

We fake an outage, confirm the switch changes over and measure voltage with the load on. After that, the inspector reviews the job and signs off.

  5. 5

    Showing you the system

You learn how the unit runs, what its status lights mean and what upkeep it needs. Our generator service and repair page covers maintenance later on.

What Moves the Cost of a Generator Install

No two generator jobs price out the same. The biggest swing is what you want running, because that sets the size of the unit and the switch. We give you a written estimate after the site visit, so you know the number before any work starts.

Generator size
Backing up a few key circuits takes a much smaller unit than running the whole house, central AC included.
Switch type
An interlock kit for a portable unit costs far less than a whole-home automatic transfer switch.
Distance and route
The farther the unit sits from your panel, the more wire and trenching or conduit the job needs.
Panel condition
An old or full panel may need work before a generator can be tied in. Our panel upgrades page explains what that involves.
Inspection fees and fuel work
Fees vary by jurisdiction, and gas piping from a plumber is a separate cost.

Generator Installation Questions

Do you pull the permit for a generator?
Yes. We file what the local jurisdiction requires for the electrical work and schedule the inspection. We are there when the inspector comes, and we fix anything flagged before we call the job done.
Should I get a standby or a portable generator?
Standby units start on their own within seconds and run on natural gas, so there is nothing to haul out or refuel. Portable units cost less and work fine if you are home to start them. We lay out both on the site visit and let you decide.
Can my generator run the AC?
It can if the unit is sized for it. Central AC has a big startup draw, so it often decides the generator size. We check your AC's ratings during the load calculation.
How long does a generator install take?
The electrical work is usually done in a day or two once the pad is ready. The longer wait tends to be the approval and inspection schedule and the gas hookup. We give you a realistic timeline in the written estimate.
How is a generator different from a battery backup?
A generator burns fuel and can run as long as the fuel lasts. A battery stores power and runs silent but for a limited time. Our home battery backup systems page goes into that option.
